LOG-ON – Thank you for joining our final online session for 2020. We really hope 2021 means life experiences so we can meet new friends, see old faces, converse freely and perhaps even share the odd handshake. And travel, even just a little bit! Fingers crossed. Good luck to all in 2021 and happy holidays.

SESSION SEVEN

GLOBAL PANDEMICS AND THE CHALLENGES OF DEFEATING COVID-19

The rapid transmission of COVID-19 has sharpened our focus on the risks of pandemics to the functioning of our society and will leave an impact for years to come. While here in Victoria we have finally achieved success in containing COVID-19, it continues to spread in many parts of the world. Given this, what does a return to ‘normal’ potentially look like, and is zero transmission a realistic goal? Furthermore, with cases still rising in other parts of the world, should investors be thinking differently as a result? During this session our speakers will discuss how the battle against COVID-19 is evolving globally, the potential for a vaccine to be successfully developed and distributed, and the key considerations in finding investments and/or sectors that offer built-in resilience, such as Healthcare.

SPEAKERS:

MARY-LOUISE MCLAWS, Professor of Epidemiology, University of NSW

MICHAEL MURRAY, Senior Investment Analyst, Australian Ethical Investments

SESSION EIGHT

BIDEN OUR TIME | AUSTRALIA AND THE FUTURE OF GLOBALISATION

When Australia eventually comes out of its first recession in almost three decades, it faces a world that will be in many ways more difficult to navigate. Caught in the middle of growing conflicts between the US and China, Australia is now actively seeking to hedge its bets by building closer ties with other regional powers. But will it be enough? Our closing speaker will provide his unique perspectives on how Australia will manage relationships with its key trading partners, and how developments in global geopolitics are set to impact the global economy in the years ahead.

BOB TYSON, Ambassador (Ret’d)
